Home / glossary / corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are steroid hormones produced naturally by the adrenal glands. They are used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including inflammation, allergies and autoimmune diseases. Corticosteroids can be administered orally, by injection, or as creams or ointments. However, long-term use of corticosteroids can have important side effects, such as weight gain, osteoporosis and increased risk of infection.
