Home / glossary / D-dimers

D-dimers are fibrin degradation products, a protein involved in blood clotting. Measurement of D-dimers in the blood is used as a diagnostic tool to exclude the presence of deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism in patients with symptoms such as leg pain or dyspnoea. However, it is important to note that high levels of D-dimers may also be due to conditions other than thrombosis, such as inflammation or cancer.
