Looking back at the European Elections

After a bucolic end to the afternoon, I went home a quarter of an hour before the results were announced. I suspected that it wouldn't be very good, but the disaster exceeded all my expectations.

So, more than 32% of French voters voted for the F... er, RN. Not to mention Ms. Niece's 5%. All this in the European elections, which, once again, will have served only as a national outlet, a referendum against the Elysée. From Jordy's first words, we see, if we had forgotten, that Europe is by no means the motivation for this vote. The guy shows up and congratulates himself on his victory. So far, nothing surprising, even 32% were announced. But suddenly, he's asking outright for the dissolution of the National Assembly... “Pfff... What a joke!” I think to myself. A little later, we get Manon Aubry's speech, completely off the wall too, in a different style: “I'm talking to you, youth of France, I understand you and blah blah blah”.

What should we do in this election? We should vote for the people we think will steer Europe in the right direction. But as we know, RN European deputies don't do much, if anything at all. In short, the bare minimum, just to keep their allowance of 7,700 euros. Of course, if you are eurosceptic, this is ideal: the more MEPs who do nothing and who, moreover, extract money from the European institution, the more obvious European inaction will be, according to them. But for those who voted for RN or Reconquête thinking they could influence the decisions in the European Parliament, bad choice...

...for bad reasons

The European Parliament is not elected by a majority of two rounds, but by proportional representation: you vote for a list and, to put it simply, depending on its score, you have more or fewer people elected from those at the top of the list. It is also worth noting that we send 81 French MEPs out of a total of 720, which is a percentage of 11.25%. So even if 81 MEPs of the same political party were to be sent, they would be forced to form alliances with other European parties to have any influence. And that is what happens. Parties can form groups provided they have at least 25 MEPs, representing at least a quarter of the member countries, i.e. 25 MEPs from 5 to 6 countries. There are currently nine groups, the largest being the EPP (Christian Democrats and Liberals), followed by the S&D (socialists of all stripes) and then Renew Europe, the group of Renaissance and Horizons. Together they have a majority, and since they are all pro-Europe they manage to agree most of the time.

As for the RN, it is part of the Identity and Democracy group, which has 58 members and carries absolutely no weight. The commissions, you might ask? Well, no, they are made up in the same proportions as the parliament itself. And, for the most part, the RN deputies also skip the commissions. So there you have it: these people are useless! They will have no influence on immigration, the Common Agricultural Policy or regulations. But they don't care, as their aim at the moment is to accumulate positions, to gain notoriety in order to come to power in France, not to act on Europe.

And the worst part is that Manu replies: “You're on, I'm dissolving it!”. WTF? he must be joking! First of all, he looks like he's taking his orders from Bardella, and secondly, he's helping to confuse people's minds, trivializing this EUROPEAN election (I mention it again because it seems that many have missed it) as a kind of validation/sanction of his policy. Finally, the calendar he is setting out for the legislative elections is rolling out a true red carpet for the RN. Under the pretext of being “disruptive”, our local Machiavelli is rushing the calendar: 3 weeks of campaigning with elections at the end of June/beginning of July. This serves the RN's interests: no one will have time to get organized, look for funding, print leaflets and posters, programs, everything will be done in a disorderly and hasty manner, even for the presidential camp. Therefore, no one will have time to reverse the trend in three weeks, which could give the RN an absolute majority in July, and thus put Bardella and a nationalist agenda in charge, just one week before the Olympics, which are already disastrous and are now turning into a farce. We were sold a figment of Jupiter; we got Nero!

He has proclaimed himself campaign leader. Well... He has not realized that people reject him and that, consequently, the more he intervenes, the less likely the “republican wake-up call” he is counting on will happen. And even if it does happen, what for? The same thing as for the last 7 years? Is he going to do a "Sarkozy" and say “I have changed”?

Just a jump to the left!

On the left side, we have a bunch of guys with no charisma whatsoever, allied with LFI and its crankies who defend a lot of sick ideas that we would rather have attributed to the extremists on the other side. The PS is allying itself with a party that has constantly booed and insulted its lead candidate, Raphaël Glücksman, throughout the campaign, just to work out how to share the investitures. And on top of that they are fooled even there. Pathetic... They tell us we need a Popular Front to “stop the flood”.

I won't even mention the abyss that separates them from the real Popular Front. But guys, without going back too far, weren't you in office from 2012 to 2017? What the hell did you manage to achieve? Why didn't you at least try to address the causes of the rise of the RN? The guys are watching the fire spread, doing nothing to stop it and come to us for help when it may already be too late. The worst part is that they would probably have more votes (but fewer seats) if they weren't united (25% united and 32% disunited).

So now we also have the stupidest left in the world. And I ask again, what's the point of organizing a blockade? What for? With whom?

Tuesday

On the right-wing, things are not getting any better either. The current excitement and the thirst for positions are helping Ciotti to reveal himself, paving the way for a suppletive LR for the RN. Except that the barons, or what's left of them, are far from all in agreement with this. The thing is, Eric would like to be Minister of the Internal Affairs, and Mayor of Nice too if possible. He has been the boss of the LR for two years and he justifies his about-turn by the failure of his party. By his own results, therefore... Sad, isn't it? We'll see if he succeeds in his gamble or if he disappears, swallowed up in the quicksand of politicking. Pathetic...

On the far right, Ms. Nièce tries to get closer to Auntie, who replies: “Yes, maybe” on Monday and “Not as long as Zemmour is there” on Tuesday. In any case, both Ciotti and Maréchal are trying to position themselves, aware that their electorates will vote for the RN if they are not around. So it makes sense to be there after all. The polls are going in the same direction, showing that the RN would get 35% in the legislative elections, the percentage above which a party can hope to secure an absolute majority.

And then Attal comes along to “talk to French people” like he probably didn't have the opportunity to do so during the campaign. He sets out the strategy they are going to follow: “There are three blocs, the far right, the far left and us, the presidential minority, the only reasonable way forward.” Well, I'm sorry, but I am reasonable and, reasonably, I am not going to sign up for another three years. Especially when the boss shows up next, on Wednesday, to explain that, in his opinion, we need to accelerate the same policy that we have been enduring for seven years now. Same player won't shoot again.

In short, wherever we look, we see people lacking new ideas, with no real vision for the country, unable to rise above the fray, mired in nauseating electioneering, while violence is on the rise, on social networks, in the street...

Not easy.

Wesh Bro!
